Abersoch Dragon Fleet

Sailing News

The Abersoch Dragon fleet was well represented at the recent SW Champs and Edinburgh Cup held at the Royal Torbay Yacht Club in Torquay.

5 Abersoch boats competed within a total fleet of 29.

Mike Budd and Greebo plus crew in Harry

Tim and Carol Saunders with George Davies in Vixen

Patrick Lomax, Simon Cash and Georgie Dewar in the former Billy Whizz now Good Grief!

Colin Brereton, Millsy and Andy in Tsunami

Mike Cope, Rob Eldridge and Susie Delves (Lomax) in Raissa

The event started with 2 days racing to compete for the SW Championship with Mike Budd finishing 4th overall and Raissa achieving a 1st Corinthian boat in Race 2 and a 12th overall.

Then the main event, The Edinburgh Cup, with varying wind conditions from fluky and fluctuating to reasonably strong with some great kite surfing achieved by all!  Highlights of this and all the racing can be viewed on

Amongst the Abersoch boats it was a close call (except Mike of course who was battling it out with the professionals) with the final race being the decider between Vixen and Good Grief!.  Final Corinthian results were: Patrick Lomax’s team in Good Grief! Finishing 6th Corinthian with Tim Saunders’ team and Vixen closely following at 8th.  The rest of us were very near the bottom and the only thing that can be said is we appear to have beaten the French….

Rob Eldridge however had a very credible 3rd as helm in the Crew’s Race.

The Edinburgh Cup will be hosted by the SCYC in 2019 and to promote and encourage external entries the entire SCYC Dragon fleet (not just the entrants) funded a BBQ hosted on behalf of the SCYC and Abersoch Dragon fleet on the Monday night.  Millsy did his usual rousing speech and promotional spiel.

And last but not least the supporting members of the Abersoch Dragon fleet that helped encourage the boats through the ups and downs of the competition!  Lou Brereton, Izzy Riddell, Sara Davies, Sarah Eldridge/Pinnington, Carol Cope and Lou Wilkins.

A good time was had by all and we look forward to next year in Abersoch.
