South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club – 2014 Sigma 33 OOD UK National Championships

It is with great pleasure to announce that the 2014 Sigma 33 OOD UK National Championships are to be sailed under the burgee of South Caernarvonshire Yacht Club (SCYC) in the idyllic sailing waters off the Llyn Peninsula in Cardigan Bay.

SCYC was founded in 1924 and has a proud history of hosting many prestigious championship events. Maintaining the highest standards both on the water and in our unique clubhouse overlooking Cardigan Bay, the Club offers unrivalled benefits to visitors and members in what must be one of the most spectacular sites in the UK.

For those not sailing the Bar and Cove Restaurant have the best views of any in Wales. Dine overlooking Snowdonia, the West Coast of Wales, St. Tudwalls Islands and, of course, Cardigan Bay itself. Watch the sailing or simply take in the view, all whilst being seated in friendly surroundings. Lunchtime and Dinner menus are served, cooked to a high standard and very reasonably priced.

If the current trend of increasing numbers of 33’s continues at SCYC, where the fleet is now up to 9, the numbers for the 2014 champs could be somewhere near or above the 30’s.

SCYC’s Club Captain has already kicked off the planning phase and is currently working with the SCYC Fleet and the Association to make sure that the 2014 Nationals will be a spectacular event to remember. More news on sponsors, SIs and the final date will be made as public as soon as finalised.

A tough economic climate and some pretty terrible weather – surely the ingredients for a year of troubles for a Yacht Club? You'd have thought so – but SCYC is managing to buck the trends. Established fleets have continued to do well and new ones are growing such as the Dragons and the Dinghies. They've got a record number of members, a Squib fleet to die for and 3 new Sigma 33s arrived in the late autumn bringing the fleet up to 8 boats. More and more associations are finding SCYC featuring in their national championship calendars and SCYC rarely has to explain what the Club is about!

It was a particularly good year for certain members of the Club. Alan Johnson & Dave Garlic finally won the Squib National Championships in 2012 after many years of being number two. Richard Fildes and his team on board Impetuous (a Corby 37) competed and won the Corby Cup, the Irish Cruiser Racing Association (ICRA) week, Cork week and Abersoch Keelboat Week.

For some years PSC has held various cruising trips and social events which have proved enjoyable and enabled us to make many friends.
In recent years interest has declined for various reasons such as weather and membership changes. It may be that cooperation between our clubs and the sharing of our plans could be beneficial.
We would like to see you whether you have a sailing boat, a powerboat or are just interested as combined events are fun.

Squib News
Good Morning Members There were 61 Squibs at the Nationals last week at Royal Western Yacht Club in Plymouth, of which 13 were from SCYC - another great turn out by our club. Racing was scheduled for 6 races over 6 days but in the end the 6 races were completed over 5 days with a wet and windless Monday on the shore. Chris and Mark Hogan started as they meant to go on winning 3 of the 6 races eventually sealing the Champs on the last day. Mike and James Budd were ultra consistent and finished second overall. Alan Johnson and Dave Garlick & Dave Best and Steve Allso were never far from the front. The new partnership of Malcolm Blackburn and Dave Shiel even managed a guest appearance at the front winning race 2. The weather was great, SCYC had 5 in the top 10, the club was incredibly hospitable and SCYC were really made to feel welcome. The fleet moves on to the Royal Dart YC in 2012. Commodore’s Update Spring 2011
Executive Summary Easter came and went in the blink of an eye. The sailing season started with the Squibs on Good Friday, we had 2 great Fitting Out Suppers over Easter on Saturday and Sunday and we held the Annual General Meeting on the Sunday evening of Easter. A new range of hoodies has been received, plans for the Dragon Northerns and Dragon Edinburgh Cup have reached the mature stage, a new lease with the landlord has been signed and the hunt is now off for a replacement for Ian (Sammo) Jones. The working party scheduled for the 27 April worked well and we will have Sue Duffy back and James Bowen in the office for the busy 6 weeks in the summer. Since the last Commodore’s Update the Council held meetings in February, March, April and May. Read More...
