Commodore’s Winter Update

Dear All
For those of you who weren’t in Abersoch during the Christmas / New Year period, I hope you all had a very Happy Christmas and wish you a Prosperous and Healthy 2017!

The year certainly ended on a high note for the Club, with 100 people feasting on a fabulous 7 course meal in the Cove and another 90 enjoying hotpot in the bar. Both parties came together in the bar for dancing to the band “A Dangerous Age” and to see the New Year in …. One of the best – if not the best – New Year’s Eve parties held at the Club; special thanks to all those who made the evening a night to remember. New Year’s Day was also enjoyed by many who had been on the beach to watch or participate in the RNLI annual swim …. For the first time, Abersoch made it on to the BBC Wales news – if you missed it, follow this link:

2016 was a quiet year in terms of the number of open events, but huge congratulations (again) to Rob Riddell and his team for organising a fantastic Edinburgh Cup on behalf of the British Dragon Association. Lawrie Smith won the Edinburgh Cup, whilst SCYC’s Mike Budd was only just beaten into third place – but Mike and his crew (Jez Entwistle and Mark Greaves) were delighted to win the Corinthian Dragon Edinburgh Cup Trophy. Further details of results and articles about the event are available on the SCYC and BDA websites ( and In his Edinburgh Cup acceptance speech Lawrie Smith, a man not normally known for his verbosity at prize-givings, not only thanked the organisers, but confirmed that the support and assistance extended to the competitors at this event and the standard of race management he had seen during the week were some of the best he has ever seen and that he would be delighted to compete in any regatta organised by the Club.

Our annual Open Event weeks – Abersoch Dinghy Week, Pandora and Squib Welsh Open Weeks , Seabird Open Week, Abersoch Mirror Week and Abersoch Keelboat Week were all successful (both on and off the water) – and Club racing was well-supported by all classes. Additionally the Club was open to all for the 130th Abersoch Annual Regatta on 6th August … which was blessed with a “champagne sailing” day, and we ran the Dragon and Small Keelboat fleets for the Spinlock IRC Welsh National Championship (co-hosted with PSC) in mid-August, when Mike Crompton and Graham Hallworth’s Injenious won the IRC2 Class. Further afield, a fleet of 15 SCYC boats went to the Squib National Championships in Weymouth, with our top three boats finishing in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places … and with only one point between each of them – a terrific effort by all concerned and congratulations to all who participated.

Bosun Arthur Jones, who has been with SCYC for over 40 years, retired in July and was given a warm send-off at a very well-attended party for him, during Keelboat Week. Arthur was made an Honorary Member of the Club at the SGM at the end of August and we look forward to seeing him and his wife Anwen at many Club events in the future. We were delighted when Rob Falck agreed to step up to the role of Bosun and also when Josh Holyoake accepted the offer to become Assistant Bosun. We look forward to working closely with both of them for many years to come.
Congratulations and thanks as well, to Immediate Past Commodore Pete Richards for two very successful years in office, and to his wife Helen for her support. Both Pete and Helen have contributed hugely to the success of the Club for many years and I am sure that they will continue to do so.

2017 promises to be a busy year; in addition to our own Club and Open Events, we will be hosting the Welsh Solo Sea Championship (27th & 28th May), the UK Laser National Championship (29th July to 4th August), the Enterprise National Championship (5th to 11th August), the Cadet National Championship (26th to 31st August), the British Contender National Championship (1st to 4th September) and the BDA Northern Championships (14th – 16th September). The now established annual golf match between SCYC and Clwb Golff Abersoch will be on 9th June. SCYC will be exhibiting at the RYA Suzuki Dinghy Show 4th – 5th March 2017, so do come and visit us there.
The racing season starts at Easter, in the meantime online entry is now open for Dinghy Week
