Commodore’s Summer 2018 Update

Welcome to the Commodore’s update! If you are reading this then you have found your way to the new SCYC website which is the result of a lot of hard work by Kate Allan (SCYC Council Member) and Jonty Storey and his team at Cardigan Creative… we hope very much that you will enjoy the new look and feel of the website – please do send any feedback to memberrelations@scyc.co.uk

2018 started with two very successful New Year’s Eve parties in the Club, with members and their guests enjoying fine dining in the Cove or a more casual hotpot in the bar. Both parties were very well attended and everyone had a great evening followed by more celebrations in the bar on New Year’s Day for those who had watched or participated in the RNLI annual swim.

Stormy weather dominated the first three months of the year and continued through the Easter weekend and much of April, resulting in the cancellation of racing for both Dragon and Squib fleets who are our usual “season openers.” However the weather did not prevent circa 100 members from enjoying the traditional Fitting Out Supper, which was held on Easter Saturday.

The Annual General Meeting was held on Easter Sunday when we were pleased to look back on a successful and profitable 2016/17 season.

Sailing finally started during the May Day Bank Holiday weekend followed by a Spring Bank Holiday Weekend Regatta which was well supported by the Squibs, Dragons and Pandoras although the majority of Class 2 boats remained on dry land. We are now getting into full-swing having hosted the RS Aero Nationals (67 boats) and the BDA Dragon Norther Championship (10 boats) during the first and second weekends of June, respectively. Light airs resulted in challenging conditions for both events but Race Officers Tim Little and John Poulson were warmly congratulated by competitors for managing to run sufficient races!

The Squib Welsh Open is being held from 15th to 18th June followed by Club weekend racing and an Early Summer Regatta Weekend for all classes on 14th & 15th July. Abersoch Dinghy Week starts on 22nd July, followed by the Firefly National Championship (28th July to 3rd August), the Pandora Welsh Open (29th July to 3rd August), Squib and Seabird Open weeks (5th to 10th August), Dragon “Week” (10th to 12th August), Abersoch Mirror Week (13th to 17th August) and Abersoch Keelboat Week (20th to 24th August).

Abersoch Regatta will be hosted by SCYC on 11th August and we look forward to another great Regatta Day both on and off the water!

Thanks to our local sponsors and Club sponsors – GJW Direct and Conwy Land Rover – for their continuing support and, of course, to the many Club volunteers without whom it would be impossible to stage so many events.

Shoreside, the Bar Beach Deck has been rebuilt and the Race Officers’ Deck is now in use although the external cladding is yet to be completed. The office corridors and Cove entrance and cloakrooms have been painted and all of the steel handrails have been cleaned and outside furniture treated (thanks to Adam, Mike Davies and the launch staff). The defibrillator has been repositioned on the outside of the Bar Beach Deck and Maintenance work continues.

Like many establishments we are reviewing our use of plastic – we have installed drinking-water taps on the middle and lower decks, no longer use plastic straws in the bar and will be selling re-usable SCYC-branded water bottles as part of our drive towards “plastic-free” status.

The most significant change shoreside, is the retirement of David Smith who has run The Cove restaurant very successfully for seven years. We wish David many happy times on the golf course and on the water and send our best wishes to Jayne as well. We are delighted to welcome Dave Gierc & Owen Griffith who are taking over from David and are currently making some changes to the restaurant layout and settling themselves in prior to opening on 15th June when they will be launching the new Cove lunch and evening menus. Check out their new website www.thecoveabersoch.co.uk for more information.

The weather in Abersoch has been glorious for the past three weeks – let’s hope it continues and that we all enjoy another fabulous summer, great sailing and great social events at SCYC!
